National Maritime Day
Honoring the Industry of the Sea
National Maritime Day has been celebrated on May 22 every year since 1933. The day
honoring the United States’ maritime industry is celebrated on the date the
first American steamship, Savannah, set sail from Savannah, Georgia on a
trans-oceanic voyage by steam power.
National Maritime Day is a very important day in America not just to recognize the
benefits of the industry but also to recognize the men and women who serve our country
in the maritime industry. Men and women who serve under the Army Corps of Engineers, Coast Guard, National Guard, Navy, Marines, and in
the Port Authorities along with several other industries serve the maritime
industry while they serve our country. It has also become a day to remember those lost at sea in service to our country.
How do you
celebrate National Maritime Day?
Much like
Memorial Day or the Fourth of July! Bring out your red, white, and blue,
parades, pool parties, BBQ’s, and of course a little nautical decor. Anchors
and boats
are perfect party decor to honor this special National Maritime Day and be sure to check in your area to see if any special events are being held. Odd are, if you live near the sea, there will be one!

Memorial Day: How to put a Unique and Nautical Twist on Celebrating America's Heroes
Party Tips and Ideas to Celebrate Memorial Day and Honor America’s Heroes
Pacific Home Furniture loves to
support, honor, and remember the men, women, and animals that have served the
United States of America. Memorial Day
began as Decoration Day after the Civil War and became an official federal holiday
in 1971.
There are
multiple ways to celebrate Memorial Day and to honor those who have sacrificed
themselves for our freedom. Some families may choose to go to memorial sites,
cemeteries to visit loved ones, museums, parades, firework displays, festivals,
or by holding a party themselves. No matter how you celebrate remember to
celebrate this Memorial Day because freedom is a beautiful thing!
Pacific Home
Furniture wants to help you host a Memorial Day party with coastal flair. Here’s
some tips and tricks to hosting a Memorial Day party for families and some fun decor ideas with a nautical twist:
- Fly the Flag – It’s not Memorial Day without displaying the American Flag proudly! So have it waving in the wind and for decorations on tables to celebrate the day.
- Memorial Day is known to be the “unofficial mark to summer” so set a menu of cookout foods such as: burgers, hot-dogs, BBQ, potato salad, pasta salad, fruit, veggies, chips, etc. Things that can be served buffet style to keep the line moving and won’t necessarily spoil after a couple hours in the heat.
- Ice cold beverages are a must for any Memorial Day party! Offer guests a variety of sodas, lemonade, tea, waters, and even a special punch. Maybe try this Pink Rhubarb Punch Recipe for a refreshing drink.
- Arrange games for every one of all ages to get involved in throughout the day to keep things active and have fun. Pools are fun but even if you don’t have one, arrange a sandbox for the little ones, volleyball or baseball for the older ones, and you can even make it interesting with a giant game of outdoor twister.
Memorial Day Decor:
- Make it unique. Everyone will use Red, White, and Blue because it’s Memorial Day but that doesn't mean everyone’s house has to look the same. Try different designs with flags. Add your own twist to decor as well like nautical touches.
- Use a table runner, like the Sardine Indigo Runner on White Linen, to help spotlight the tables. The runner will also give off a cozier vibe and make cleaning up a little bit easier.
- Add touches of red and blue throughout the backyard or wherever you may celebrate. You can use vases such as the Essentials Marine Blue Polka Dot Vase to hold red or white flowers as a centerpiece for tables. Try using the Wooden Red Anchor with Hook Rope for accent decor as a fun red touch to the summer decor.
- If you need a mat or a towel to set hot dishes or platters on, keep it with decor and try the Starfish Red Kitchen Towel. This gorgeous towel is perfect for the coastal touch to decor and the Stars and Stripes of Memorial Day!

Spring Inspired!
Using Pink and Posies in a Girl’s Bedroom
At Pacific Home Furniture, we love
to take some inspiration from nature.
With flowers blooming and birds singing, one can’t help but feel a
little whimsical and for a girl’s bedroom, this flight of fancy is perfect. A little feminine, but we believe this
inspiration will also span through the years.
The rose
garland rug makes a perfect base.
It anchors the room but also gives her something soft and colorful under
foot.
We absolutely adore the Carolina
poster bed. The elegant lines of
the tall poster give a nod to formality and tradition while the playful color
of Jambalaya makes the bed soft and fun for girls. This color choice is a popular one for this
season – Panetone
calls it Strawberry
Ice and it is one of the spring trends for 2015.
We’ve chosen to echo the flowers in the rug with a fun daisy
print in fuchsia. The asterisk
mirror adds both a little glam and curvy, feminine lines. For a little touch of sweetness for the
nightstand or dresser, the Florina
milk glass bowl which picks up on the green in the rug and the sweet
little bird perched on the side just fits.
